A few days after we shared 10 year old LUNA's story with you, she died peacefully in her sleep of heart failure.

Thank you to those who sponsored her heart medicine and her food. We can only say, that we tried to provided Luna with the best possible life in our shelter. We had so hoped that she would know the love of a family before she left this earth.

Dear Luna,

In this last chapter of your life, we will not let you down.

You did not have the good luck to be adopted by a loving family, but at our shelter in Svilos, Serbia, we are doing everything we can to make sure that you have no physical pain. When we noticed that you were not feeling well, we tested you for Babesiose, Herzwurm, Ehrlichiose, and Anaplasmose. Fortunately, all of these tests proved to be negative, but old age (you are at least 10 years old, as best as the vet can assess) has brought heart problems. We are now giving you heart medication to support you as long as your heart can manage.

You are a good dog. You had been badly abused before you came to us. You appreciated the food we gave you, and you happily took refuge in the new dog house which we provided for you. Slowly, you learned to trust the shelter director. The shelter team in Serbia and the Animal Care Austria team will continue to do everything we can for you, but we are so sorry that we could not give you the one thing you really needed – a loving family.

With the borders closed, Animal Care Austria doesn’t know if we will ever see Luna again. Her heart may stop before we can travel to Serbia again.

We would like to say, “Thank You” to the Animal Care Austria supporters who have donated to keep our shelters functioning during this this difficult time. You are helping Luna and the other 180 dogs who are waiting for the borders to open, and to be welcomed in a loving home.
